Current Thoughts: PE Should Probably Be Graded
Calculus and geography aren’t bad to know — they just shouldn’t be a priority.
Most people will never need derivatives to navigate their lives. But budgeting? Understanding how interest compounds? Staying fit enough to avoid preventable disease? Those are every day skills you need in life.
And yet somehow, our schools require algebraic proofs but not personal finance. They grade physical education like it’s a locker room scavenger hunt — “Did you bring your shoes?” — not like it’s the foundation of health for the next 50 years.
Here’s the truth: real life punishes poor health and poor money habits far more than a bad test grade.
So yes, I want my kids to give their best in school. But if it comes down to an A in calculus or knowing how to meal prep, budget for rent, and love movement? Skip the cram session to study for the test. Go for a walk, cook a real meal, and read up on investing.
