TML: Better Goal Setting, Coffee, More Coffee

Current Thoughts

When we don’t match our habits to our goals, we have to change one or the other. Since habits are harder to change, we change our goals instead. Obviously, this isn’t a great solution since it stifles our growth. Goals should draw us to become better versions of ourselves. So, how can we set ourselves up for success?

First, set more powerful goals. Don’t just set a goal of losing 20 lbs. Set a goal to lose 20 lbs so you can hike with your spouse in the mountains till your final day. Don’t just set a goal of making more money. Set a goal to impact enough people in a positive way that it allows you to make that money and also set a goal for the money that is impactful as well.

Second, consider the habits and microskills you’ll need reach your goal. If you have a fitness based goal, you’ll need to develop the microskills of understanding correct movement and the correct self talk in order to develop the habit of training consistently, despite how you might feel emotionally about it.

Third, consider an educational plan to develop these microskills and habits. It will likely require some level of self education, mentorship/coaching, and community. Most worthy goals require some level of each of these.

Better goal setting, better awareness, and better planning will lead to more successful goal achieving.

Things I Like

It’s been hot in Memphis over the last month. I enjoy my morning coffee but the last thing I want is hot coffee when it’s 100 degrees outside so I do cold brew. If you enjoy cold coffee/brew but haven’t made it yourself, it’s incredibly easy. Course grind your beans, put them in a reusable coffee bag, put it in a gallon glass pitcher, fill that with water and let it sit for 12-24 hours and you’ve got your cold brew for the week.
