Current Thoughts
Every night before bed my kids do the following work out:
10 Squats
10 Push Ups
10 Sit Ups
10 Glute Bridges
10 Squat Jumps
Sometimes they do it without me telling them to. Sometimes they do it with excitement when I tell them. Sometimes they do it after a lot of complaining about it. “Ugh! Why do I have to do this?” is usually what that sounds like. My answer usually sounds something like, “Because it makes us stronger, healthier, smarter, and happier. Mom worked out today. Dad worked out today. You’re going to work out today too because that’s what we do.”
Some people worry that making kids workout will lead them to not wanting to do so as adults but I disagree. Most of what I make my kids do is that which they will need to do as adults and they tend to push back on pretty much all of it at first; Brushing their teeth, putting their dishes away, taking out the trash. After a while though they tend to just adopt the habit. Do they need reminders along the way, absolutely. Do they still complain on occasion? You bet. But they’re doing it and building the habit. And, I catch my kids in our home gym doing their own workouts all the time so, despite the occasional push back, it’s sticking.
