Current Thoughts
disease/dəˈzēz/
An abnormal condition that negatively affects the structure or function of a living organism.
In 1948 the WHO classified obesity as a disease. This classification was later adopted both the NIH and the AMA in 1998 and 2017 respectively. There are arguments for and against this decision and as yet, the verdict is still not out on whether this decision has had a positive impact or not (read HERE and HERE for more).
We do know that obesity is linked to worse health outcomes and lifespan. We also know that poor strength and cardiovascular fitness are highly linked to poor health outcomes and a shorter life expectancy as well. I propose we list them as disease states as well. They perfectly meet the criteria.
They are easily measurable and both have a highly effective treatment plan: exercise. Imagine if people went to their doctor and had their VO2 Max and Pull Up Max tested and then were given a script for 2 days a week of strength training and 2 days a week of cardiovascular exercise. If compliance wasn’t an issue, it would likely solve most of the current health problems.
Maybe that’s the next sales strategy for gyms and personal trainer: we all start wearing white coats and handing out scripts for health and fitness.
Things I Like
A Ulysses contract (or Ulysses pact) is a proactive decision made while of sound mind designed to bind your future actions when your judgment may be compromised. The name originates from the Greek myth where Ulysses instructed his crew to tie him to the ship’s mast so he could safely listen to the Sirens without steering to his death.
Things to Check Out
Entitlement spending (Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security) makes up the majority of our national expenses which has officially by passed our GDP and all of which is on track to be insolvent around 2033. Something has to give at some point and, since it’s highly unlikely we’ll get ahead of it, it’s probably going to be pretty painful, especially if you are reliant on the healthcare system. Goal: don’t be.
