1/26/26: The illusion of control, rising healthcare cost, psychology is biology

“…last night, looking at the state of our country I decided now was not the best time for me to splurge.”
This was a response from a potential personal training client who decided the next day not to begin training with us. This is not meant to be a public critique of them but instead to be a moment of understanding for others.

It’s no coincidence that the expansion of smart phone usage mirrors the increase of anxiety across our society. Our biology hasn’t changed in the last 20 years but what has is the amount of negative information we’re being fed daily. To be fair, almost all the negative information we’re being fed is information we seek. Our brains are wired to seek negative information and our behavior with media along with their content choices exemplifies that. We weren’t made to worry about everything all at once all the time, yet that’s what we find ourselves doing.

In the grand scheme of things there is nothing you can do about the weather, geo politics, or the economy (among plenty of other topics). If consuming media around these topics or others causes you to be anxious, then take this message as your intervention to break that addiction. If you want to make the world a better place, start by making your bed first, as Jordan Peterson would say. Start by showing you can improve your own life first before you change your attention to everyone else.

There is not a single part of life that improves from poor health. The negative impacts feed into every part of your life and spills over into the lives of everyone you touch. As the saying goes, fitness isn’t everything but it does help everything. There is an insurmountable mountain of data around how exercise helps anxiety.

If you’re spending any amount of your life worrying about something negative you can’t control and not taking care of your health and fitness which are predominantly within your control, I want to invite you to change. Make your life better and in turn, the world a better place as well.

What cost has increased the most over the last 25 years? Hospital services. Higher costs, worst outcomes. Better invest in your own health early.
Psychology is biology. Want to improve your psychological state? It help to know what’s actually going on inside your brain.

Have a great week!
