12/29/25: 50% of people fail this challenge, Feelings, Resilience

Around 11,000 people attempt to climb Mt. Rainier every year. Only half of them succeed. For those that don’t, the reasons are numerous; some things out of their control, like weather and altitude sickness, and some things within their control, like gear and mental and physical preparation. At the core, the reason people fail is because climbing Mt. Rainier is difficult, as are all worthy pursuits.

Both climbing mountains and pursuing physical fitness are expressions of a desire to live a full life, a life well lived. They are achievable but not necessarily easy, hence the success rate is not 100%.

You might not have succeeded in your pursuit of physical fitness this year. Both things within and outside of your control may have caused you to turn around. You can throw your hands in the air, make excuses, make justifications, and turn your back on the pursuit of a life well lived…

Or you can try again. You can recognize that the worthy pursuit is difficult and sometimes takes more than one attempt to succeed. taken from you.
