Current Thoughts: Being Unhealthy Is Like Being Hungover Constantly
It’s hard to know what it feels like to be healthy and fit at your current age if you’re not. Maybe you can think back to a time in which you were in better shape and extrapolate out but that’s still more of a guess than a precise measure. Along those same lines it’s hard to know what the reverse of that would feel like. If you’ve been exercising regularly for a couple decades, how accurate can you estimate how you would feel if you hadn’t been?
Here’s how I consider it: I know what my body and mind feel like when I treat them in a healthy way and I also know what they feel like when I don’t. When I talk to people about their health and fitness and they explain what they’re feeling, it sounds very similar to how I feel when I treat my body poorly, ie when I’ve drank too much alcohol, ate too much unhealthy food, not moved enough, and not gotten enough sleep. I feel like absolutely crap. I feel hungover.
As best as I can figure, this is what being unhealthy feels like, 24/7. That sucks. If you’re having a hard time connecting value to exercising and eating clean consistently, I would recommend thinking of if through that lens. Do you want to feel hungover everyday for the rest of your life?
