2/17/25: Why You Need Friends 20 Years Younger Than you, Kimchi, Metal Band Recommendation

How many people in their 70’s and 80’s getting after in the gym every day? Not many. Is that because they’re at a different gym that specializes in people over 60? Nope. Only 15% of Americans get the recommended amount of exercise (and quite frankly, that bar is pretty low). I’m sure if you’re reading this newsletter you have some desire to age well and be able to enjoy physical activity throughout all your decades.

That’s why I think it’s important to spend time doing physical activity with people younger than you as you age. I believe this is important for several reasons. First, as we age, the total amount of people who are active declines. If you want to be active with others, there’s usually a larger pool to choose from in those who are younger. Second, social norms and standards play a big role in how we make decisions and act. You’ll get pushed better by those standards from young people who are more fit and active than peers who are less.

More and more data is tying in the importance of digestive health to our overall health including our mental health. Most of the highly processed foods we consume destroy our gut health and often we don’t just need to consume less processed food, we also need to increase food that is good for our gut. One of my favorites in Kimchi. It’s a fermented gabbage with some spice that is common in asian cultures. I’ve been adding it to my lunch or in my eggs at night. If you like a little spice and want some healthier gut function, give it a shot.

I love listening to skilled musicians who can create an album with a wide variety of sounds. This band is one of my favorites. You might describe them as progressive metal and this is their best album. It features really melodic songs all the way to very heavy doom metal songs. It’s all over the place.
